Korea National Pension (NPS) Refund for Foreigners: How to Claim Every Won Back When You Leave
If you worked in South Korea, your employer and you each contributed 4.5% of your gross salary
every month to the National Pension Service (NPS / 국민연금공단). That is a combined 9% quietly building up in your
name. When you leave Korea permanently, you may be entitled to receive all of it back as a tax-free
lump-sum refund (반환일시금). This guide explains exactly who qualifies, how much you get,
and the fastest way to claim it.
What Is the NPS Lump-Sum Refund?
Korea’s National Pension requires at least 10 years (120 months) of contributions to qualify
for a monthly old-age pension. Most foreign workers leave before hitting that threshold, so the law provides a
one-time refund instead. The refund covers:
- Your own contributions (4.5% of monthly standard income, every enrolled month)
- Your employer’s matching contributions (another 4.5%) — yes, you get both halves
- Interest calculated at the NPS’s declared rate for the relevant period
Note: From 2026 the combined NPS contribution rate is 9.0% (rising gradually to 13% by 2033
under the 2024 pension reform). The lump-sum refund always reflects the rate in effect when contributions were made.
Do You Qualify? Three Routes to Eligibility
1. Reciprocity Agreement Countries (상호주의)
If your home country grants Korean nationals a pension refund when they leave, Korea grants you the same in return.
As of January 2026, the NPS lists 25+ reciprocity countries, including the United States, Canada,
United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, France, Japan, China, India, the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and
others. Always confirm the current list on the
NPS English website — it is updated periodically.
2. Social Security Totalization Agreement Countries
Korea has totalization agreements with 30+ countries (US, Canada, Germany, UK, France, Australia, Japan, etc.).
Under these agreements you are often exempt from mandatory NPS enrollment. If you did contribute,
specific refund rules apply — confirm directly with the NPS for your situation.
3. Visa-Route Automatic Eligibility (E-9, H-2)
Holders of E-9 (Non-professional Employment) and H-2 (Working Holiday / Overseas Korean)
visas are automatically eligible for the lump-sum refund regardless of their home country’s reciprocity
status. This rule protects migrant workers from countries not on the reciprocity list.
When Can You Claim?
- You are leaving Korea permanently (losing Korean residency)
- Your work or residence visa expires and is not renewed
- You reach age 60 without qualifying for a monthly pension
- In the event of death (paid to the bereaved family)
⚠ Critical deadline: The right to claim expires 5 years after you become
eligible (i.e., after leaving Korea). Most practitioners recommend applying before or on the day of departure.
How Much Will You Get Back?
A simple estimate: average monthly gross salary × 9% × months worked, plus interest.
Example — earned ₩3,000,000/month for 24 months:
₩3,000,000 × 9% × 24 months = ₩6,480,000 (~USD 4,900 at ₩1,320/USD)
The NPS adds interest at the three-year bank deposit rate (approximately 3–4% in recent years).

Step-by-Step: How to Apply
Option A — Apply at an NPS Branch Before Departure (Recommended)
-
Visit any NPS branch (국민연금공단 지사). Bring your passport, Alien Registration Card (ARC /
외국인등록증), bank account details, and a copy of your departure flight ticket. -
Fill in the Lump-Sum Refund Claim Form (반환일시금 지급청구서) — available at the branch or
downloadable from the NPS website. - Submit your documents (see checklist below).
-
Receive payment within 3–14 business days to your designated bank account.
Korean bank accounts are processed faster; overseas transfers add 1–2 extra weeks.
Option B — Airport Payment Counter at Incheon (ICN)
The NPS operates a dedicated counter inside Incheon International Airport Terminal 1 (3F Departure Hall).
You can claim on the spot and receive a same-day cash or immediate bank transfer.
Arrive at least 3 hours before your flight to allow processing time.
Option C — Apply from Abroad (After Departure)
-
Online: Via the NPS website (nps.or.kr/eng)
if you hold a Korean public authentication certificate (공동인증서). -
By mail: Send notarised documents to any NPS branch. All signatures must be notarised by the
Korean embassy or consulate in your country. -
Via domestic proxy (대리인): Authorise a trusted person in Korea to apply on your behalf with
a notarised power of attorney.
Required Documents Checklist
- ☑ Lump-sum refund claim form (반환일시금 지급청구서)
- ☑ Passport copy (all pages with entry/exit stamps)
- ☑ Alien Registration Card (ARC) copy, or proof of loss of residency
- ☑ Bank account copy — Korean bank OR overseas account with SWIFT/IBAN details
- ☑ Departure flight ticket or confirmation (for pre-departure applications)
- ☑ If applying from abroad: notarised identity documents + power of attorney (if using a proxy)
Tax Treatment
The NPS lump-sum refund is exempt from Korean income tax — Korea withholds nothing on the
payout. However, you may owe tax in your home country; consult a local tax adviser. US persons should check
IRS rules regarding foreign pension distributions.
Key Tips & Common Mistakes
-
Don’t forget the employer half. You reclaim not just your 4.5% but also the employer’s
matching 4.5% — that doubles your refund. -
Close your ARC properly. Officially surrendering your ARC at departure creates a clear
eligibility paper trail and prevents complications. -
Keep your pay stubs. If NPS records don’t match your salary history, having documentation
speeds up resolution. -
Don’t miss the 5-year window. After 5 years from eligibility, the claim right lapses
permanently — you lose the money. -
Multiple stays in Korea? Contributions from all covered periods are combined for the
refund, as long as you haven’t already claimed for a previous stint.
